The Fresh Produce Association of the Americas (FPAA) is deeply concerned about the newly announced tariffs on fresh fruits and vegetables imported from Mexico. As American companies and bedrock employers in our communities, we are concerned this decision will negatively impact jobs, food availability and prices, and Americans’ health. Studies show that consumers have paid higher prices due to previously announced tariffs.

Our industry has a rich history, dating back to the late 1800s, when American entrepreneurs formed partnerships in Northern Mexico to import fresh produce into the United States. Today, we’re proud to support almost 270,000 American jobs and contribute an estimated $14.84 billion to the U.S. economy.

However, tariffs pose a serious threat to these jobs and the affordability of healthful food. While we support efforts to strengthen border security, we believe tariffs are not the solution. We encourage the governments of both countries to work together to find solutions that deliver positive results, fostering a thriving region built on strong investment and fair trade.

In line with the vision to help Americans eat healthier, we urge the United States, Mexico, and Canada to reach a quick agreement that provides for a secure border while allowing us to remain a reliable supplier of fresh, safe, and reasonably priced produce.
