The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Marketing Service has finalized a pilot program for inspecting tomatoes in a super-lot for loads crossing through Nogales.  The goal is to show the pilot program is successful to expand super lots to all ports of entry inspecting tomatoes.

You can view the full overview of the program here.  https://www.ams.usda.gov/sites/default/files/media/TomatoSuperLotPilot.pdf .  This program allows for up to three entry numbers of tomatoes from the same signatory number with the same pack style and size to be combined for one large inspection.

The FPAA has been working with the USDA to implement this type of program following the success of the super-lot program for grapes started several years ago when inspection needs continued to increase for grapes.  Super-lots allow for increased efficiencies in inspections while still ensuring loads meet the quality requirements.

Following and attached is the notice sent to the inspection applicants in November 2024 outlining the new super-lot inspection pilot program for tomatoes.  Also attached you can find the appendix that outlines warehouse requirements for conducting super-lot inspections.  Members are encouraged to work with the Arizona Department of Agriculture to ensure their warehouses are set up for super-lot inspections for tomatoes.  For questions, please contact the Arizona Department of Agriculture at (520) 281-0783.
